truly trustworthy.’ At that, everyone craned his neck to see who would be chosen, and the Prophet dispatched Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah.

Al-Bukhārī likewise records—on the authority of Ḥudhayfah—that he said:

‘The Chief (al-Sayyid) and the Advocate (al-ʿĀqib), the two representatives of Najrān, came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—intending to engage him in mutual imprecation. One of them said to the other, “Do not do it; by Allah, if he truly is a prophet and we exchange imprecations with him, neither we nor our descendants after us will ever prosper.”

They then said, “We will give you whatever you ask; just send with us a trustworthy man.”

He replied, “I will certainly send with you a trustworthy man—truly trustworthy.” The Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—looked eagerly toward him. He then said, “Stand, Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah.” When he rose, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—declared, “This is the trustee of this community.”’

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—also appointed ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm over them and drafted for him the renowned document that sets out the obligatory shares and the Sunnah rulings. Al-Nasāʾī transmitted the full text, while other scholars have reported parts of it separately.

قَالَ: فَاسْتَشْرَفَ لَهَا النَّاسُ، قَالَ: فَبَعَثَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ. وَلِلْبُخَارِيِّ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ: «جَاءَ السَّيِّدُ وَالْعَاقِبُ صَاحِبَا نَجْرَانَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُلَاعِنَاهُ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا لِصَاحِبِهِ: لَا تَفْعَلْ، فَوَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ كَانَ نَبِيًّا فَلَاعَنَّا لَا نُفْلِحُ نَحْنُ وَلَا عَقِبُنَا مِنْ بَعْدِنَا، قَالَا: إِنَّا نُعْطِيكَ مَا سَأَلْتَنَا وَابْعَثْ مَعَنَا رَجُلًا أَمِينًا، فَقَالَ: لَأَبْعَثَنَّ مَعَكُمْ رَجُلًا أَمِينًا حَقَّ أَمِينٍ، فَاسْتَشْرَفَ لَهَا أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: قُمْ يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ، فَلَمَّا قَامَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: هَذَا أَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ» . وَكَذَلِكَ اسْتَعْمَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمْرَو بْنَ حَزْمٍ، وَكَتَبَ لَهُ الْكِتَابَ الْمَشْهُورَ الَّذِي فِيهِ الْفَرَائِضُ وَالسُّنَنُ، وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ النَّسَائِيُّ بِطُولِهِ، وَرَوَى النَّاسُ بَعْضَهُ مُفَرَّقًا.
