Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

He said: In the fifth year of Constantine’s reign he appointed Alexander—disciple of the martyred Patriarch Peter and companion of Achillas—as Patriarch of Alexandria. Alexander held the office for sixteen years, and in the fifteenth year of his tenure the great council met in the city of Nicaea, where the Orthodox Creed was formulated.

Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria, then forbade Arius to enter the church and pronounced a curse on him, saying, “Arius is accursed, for Patriarch Peter, before his martyrdom, told us: ‘Allah has cursed Arius; therefore do not accept him and do not let him enter the church.’ ”

At Asyut, a city in the Egyptian province, there was a bishop who shared Arius’s doctrine; Alexander anathematised him as well.

In Alexandria there stood a magnificent temple that Queen Cleopatra had built
