Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Both of them were natives of that province, and he likewise put Barbara to death. The chronicle also records a campaign that took place between him and Shapur: Shapur came to him in disguise, yet he recognised him.

He said: As for Maxentius, he was a scourge upon the people of Rome. He enslaved everyone in the city—above all the Christians—seizing their wealth and killing their men, women, and children.

When the Romans learned that Constantine had assumed the throne, that he detested evil and loved righteousness, and that the subjects of his realm lived with him in calm and safety, the leaders of Rome wrote to Constantine, imploring him to rescue them from the bondage of Maxentius, the enemy of Allah.

When he read their letters, he was overcome with profound sorrow and confusion, unsure how to proceed.

While he was deep in thought, there appeared to him at midday in the sky a cross fashioned of brilliant stars, encircled by the words: “By this you shall prevail.”

He asked his companions, “Did you see what I saw?”
They replied, “Yes.”

From that moment he accepted Christianity, and that occurred six years after his father’s death.
