of Shapur son of Hormizd, king of Persia; along with him two rulers shared the sovereignty of Rome for twenty-one years. These rulers unleashed against the Christians a calamity of vast proportions—unceasing grief, excruciating torment, and a ferocity beyond description, marked by slaughter, torture, and the wholesale seizure of property. They sent thousands to martyrdom and subjected Saint George to every manner of torture before killing him in Palestine. They likewise put to death Saint Menas, Saint Victor, Aithmachus, Mercurius, and many others besides.
He said: In the tenth year of their reign Peter was appointed patriarch of Alexandria; he served for ten years and was then killed.
