and from Ananias, whom Mark the Evangelist had consecrated, down to the eleventh Patriarch of Alexandria, there was not a single bishop anywhere in the province of Egypt, nor had the patriarchs before him ever ordained one. When the laity heard the bishops calling the patriarch “father,” they said, “If we call the bishop ‘father,’ and the bishop calls the patriarch ‘father,’ then we ought to call the patriarch ‘Baba,’ meaning ‘grandfather,’ for he is the father of our father.” From the time of Heraclas onward, therefore, the Patriarch of Alexandria has been styled “Baba,” that is, “grandfather.”
