Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

“For the sake of David, Your servant, let not the face of Your anointed be put to shame. The Lord made a truthful covenant with David and will never revoke it.”

Here, by “His anointed” he means himself, for God anointed him for prophethood and for kingship. David says the same in other places in his Psalms, referring to himself as “the anointed of God.”

He went on:

“When one examines the Gospel, the letters of Paul, and the other writings on which the Christians base their proofs, he finds some twenty thousand verses in which the name of the Messiah appears—and every one of them testifies to the Messiah’s servitude, to the fact that he is a commissioned, dependent being whom God has singled out for honor. Only a very small number of difficult, ambiguous passages remain. Each group among those who have fashioned the law to suit their whims has interpreted those few texts according to its own corrupt reading, clinging to that faulty interpretation while abandoning the far larger body of passages that proclaim his servitude. Had they truly sought the truth, they would have reconciled those rare, anomalous difficulties—which can in fact be understood otherwise—with the many clear and manifest passages that require no interpretation. For the proper method is to judge the part by the whole, to infer what is hidden from what is present, and to explain the obscure by what is plain. Among those problematic verses is what we cited in
