He said:
Is there, in this very creed, any shadow of doubt or a single peg upon which the obstinate champion of your cause might hang an objection? Ponder these words, O people of the Gospel, for none of you can escape their force or refute what they state plainly.
If you maintain that the one who was killed and crucified is God Himself, then Mary, on your own reasoning, gave birth to God—exalted is He above what they ascribe to Him.
But if you say he was a mere human being, then Mary gave birth to a human being; and in that admission the entire edifice of your faith collapses. Choose whichever of the two positions you like, for either one overturns the religion.
He said:
Reason itself obliges every rational person to refrain from worshipping a deity whom Mary—a woman descended from Adam—bore, who then dwelt on earth for thirty years subject to the regulations of ordinary mortals: nourishment and upbringing, health and illness, fear and security, learning and teaching. During that span you cannot plausibly claim that any of the prerogatives of divinity were manifest in him, nor can you allege that he was exempt from any of humanity’s states—its needs, necessities, worries, trials, and daily transactions. Only after this long period, as you assert, did he begin to reveal the command of God Most High, the prophecies, and the dazzling, miraculous signs by the power of God Most High—signs that had already appeared at the hands of other prophets, some equal to them and some surpassing them—yet his mission in this regard lasted less than three years. Thereafter his affair, according to your description, ended with what you attribute to him of imprisonment, beating, revilement, crucifixion, and killing. Can sound minds accept what they allege
