for the stipulated jizya. That levy is well known among the scholars, and Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām cites it in his Book of Revenues, recording it through two separate chains.
Abū ʿUbayd—may Allah have mercy on him—said:
“Abū Ayyūb al-Dimashqī related to us; he said: Saʿdān ibn Yaḥyā narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥumayd, from Abū al-Malīḥ al-Hudhalī, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—made peace with the people of Najrān and wrote for them a document:
‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. This is what Muhammad the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—has written for the people of Najrān, when he had…’
الْجِزْيَةِ الْمَذْكُورَةِ مَعْرُوفٌ عِنْدَ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ،
وَقَدْ ذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ فِي كِتَابِ الْأَمْوَالِ ذَكَرَهُ مِنْ طَرِيقَيْنِ:
قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ،
قَالَ:
حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدَانُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي حُمَيْدٍ،
عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ الْهُذَلِيِّ:
«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَالَحَ أَهْلَ نَجْرَانَ،
فَكَتَبَ لَهُمْ كِتَابًا:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، هَذَا مَا كَتَبَ مُحَمَّدٌ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ، إِذْ كَانَ لَهُ
