—and His saying,
“Already has the command of Allah come; so do not seek to hasten it” ⦗al-Nahl 16:1⦘.
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Allah will say to Paradise, ‘You are My mercy; through you I show mercy to whom I will among My servants,’ and He will say to the Fire, ‘You are My punishment; by you I punish whom I will among My servants.’”
He also said:
“When Allah created mercy, He made it one hundred portions. He sent down one portion, and by it the creatures show mercy and affection toward one another; He kept ninety-nine portions with Him. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will add this portion to those, and with them He will show mercy to the creatures.”
People say of rain, “This is tremendous power,” and they say, “May Allah forgive you His knowledge concerning you,” meaning what He knows about you. Referring to something created by the word as “a word” belongs to this same linguistic category.
Imam Ahmad recorded in his book Refutation of the Jahmites—and others have reported the same—that the incarnationist Christians and the Jahmite negators raised objections against the Ahl al-Sunnah. The Christians said, “The Quran is the word of Allah and uncreated, and the Messiah is the word of Allah, so he too is uncreated.” The Jahmites said, “The Messiah is the word of Allah and is created; therefore the Quran, being the word of Allah, must also be created.”
