Moreover, the episode of the Najrān delegation is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections. In al-Bukhārī and Muslim, on the authority of Ḥudhayfah—and Muslim also relates it from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ—who said:
When the following verse was revealed: “Then say: ‘Come, let us summon our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves’” ⦗Āl ʿImrān 61⦘, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called ʿAlī, Fāṭimah, Ḥasan, and Ḥusayn and said, “O Allah, these are my family.”
Al-Bukhārī also records—from Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān—that “al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, the two chiefs of Najrān, came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, intending to engage him in mutual imprecation (mubāhala). One of them said to the other, ‘Do not do it, for by Allah, if he truly is a prophet and he invokes a curse upon us, neither we nor our progeny after us will ever prosper.’ They then said, ‘We will give you only what you have asked of us; just send with us a trustworthy man—do not send with us anyone but a trustworthy man.’ The Prophet replied, ‘I will certainly send with you a trustworthy man, truly trustworthy.’”
