and the power. It is the One who possesses power who is the Creator, and He created all things by His power, whereas the power itself is not the creator. The same distinction holds between the One who wills and the will: Allah created things by His will, yet His will is not the creator.
Likewise, supplication and worship are directed to the divine Creator, not to any of His attributes. All people say, “O Allah, O our Lord, O our Creator, have mercy on us and forgive us,” but no one says, “O Speech of Allah, forgive us and have mercy on us,” or “O Power of Allah, O Will of Allah, O Knowledge of Allah, forgive us and have mercy on us.” Allah, exalted is He, creates by His power, His will, and His speech, yet His attributes are not themselves the creators.
Eighth angle:
David, peace be upon him, said: “By the Word of Allah the heavens and the earth were created.” This statement agrees with what appears in the Quran, the Torah, and the other books of the prophets: that Allah says to a thing, “Be!” and it comes to be. The phrase occurs many times in the Quran, and in the Torah Allah said: “Let there be such-and-such; let there be such-and-such.”
Ninth angle:
They claim, “There is no creator except Allah and His Word and His Spirit.” If by His Word they mean His speech, and by His Spirit His life, then these are attributes of Allah, just like His knowledge and power. None of the prophets ever spoke of Allah’s life as “the Spirit of Allah.” Whoever attributes such a meaning to any prophet’s words that contain the term “spirit” is lying about him.
Hence we say: His speech and His life are attributes of Allah, just as His knowledge and His power are; consequently, the Creator is Allah alone, and His attributes are included within His very name—there is no need to regard them
