Section: Refuting Their Claim That the Qur’an Calls the Messiah a Creator
They say, “Allah has likewise named him a creator in this Book, where He says:
‘…when you fashion from clay the shape of a bird by My leave, then you breathe into it and it becomes a bird by My leave’ (al-Ma’idah 110).
By ‘creator,’ they argue, the verse points to the Word of Allah that became united with the human nature taken from Mary, for He said through David the prophet, ‘By the Word of Allah the heavens and the earth were created; no creator exists except Allah, His Word, and His Spirit.’
This, they maintain, supports our own view and belief regarding the Lord Messiah, because he also said:
‘I indeed create for you out of clay the likeness of a bird; then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s permission’ (Āl ʿImrān 49)—that is, by the permission of the divine nature of the Word that is united with the human nature.
