You are the Manifest; nothing is above You. You are the Hidden; nothing is beneath You.’ Thus He is independent of everything besides Himself, while everything besides Him is in need of Him. For that reason, whatever attributes Allah ascribes to Himself in no way resemble the attributes of created beings, just as His Essence does not resemble their essences. He is established upon His Throne, as He has informed us, yet He has no need of the Throne.
A created being who sits upon a couch, a ship, or a mount would plummet if what is beneath him were removed, because he depends on it; but Allah is free of every created thing, and it is by His power that the Throne and those who bear it are sustained.
The three Christian sects all affirm ittihād (union), so their analogy of water filling a container is of no benefit to them. Even were they to posit mere hulūl (indwelling)—asserting that the Lord has no need of the human nature, that it neither contains Him nor touches Him, but that, as He addressed Moses from the tree, so He might be present—this would still entail that the human nature acquires none of divinity, just as the tree did not.
