—the light that falls upon the earth, the walls, the air, and other bodies when they face the sun, the fire, a human being, or the soul that inheres in those substances. If this is what is meant, it is merely a reflected ray, a redirected light, and not an attribute residing in the sun or in the fire themselves.
If, however, what is meant is the reality that was present in the Messiah—something that is called light and spirit, even the light of God—then the Exalted has said:
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is that of a niche wherein is a lamp; the lamp is in a glass, the glass as though it were a dazzling star, lit from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if no fire touched it: light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills” ⦗al-Nūr 35⦘.
He, Most High, also said:
“Thus We have revealed to you a spirit from Our command. You did not know what Scripture was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants” ⦗al-Shūrā 52⦘.
He has therefore informed us that the spirit He revealed He likewise made into a light by which He guides whom He wills.
