Section: A rebuttal of what is found in the Torah—“We sanctify You, we exalt You, and we render unto You a three-fold sanctification, as is recorded on the tongue of Your prophet Isaiah.”
As for their statement:
“We sanctify You, we magnify You, and we render unto You a three-fold sanctification, as is recorded on the tongue of Your prophet Isaiah,”
and their words:
“Holy, holy, holy—Lord of hosts, Lord of the heavens and the earth,”
we reply:
This wording is perfectly clear: what is being made “threefold” is the act of sanctification itself, not the Sacred God. The same applies to their phrase “Holy, holy, holy.” They have declared His holiness three times. Indeed, they said: “We sanctify You and render unto You a three-fold sanctification,” placing “threefold” as a verbal noun governed by the verb “to sanctify,” so that the meaning is, “We sanctify You with a three-fold sanctification.” This is like saying, “I glorified You with a three-fold glorification,” that is, “I glorified You three times.” Likewise they said, “We make it threefold for You,” meaning, “We repeat the sanctification for You three times.” They did not say, “You are three.” Rather, they cast themselves as the ones who perform the three-fold sanctification, the ones who render it threefold. This is explicit proof that they praise Him three times, not that they praise three gods or three hypostases.
