Section: Refuting Their Appeal to David’s Words as Evidence for the Messiah’s Lordship

They say, “We shall cite a third proof. David said in the Zabur, in the one-hundred-and-ninth Psalm:

‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand until I place your enemies beneath the soles of your feet.’

The answer may be given from several angles:

First: “My Lord” cannot possibly refer to one of Allah’s attributes, for neither David nor any other prophet ever called any divine attribute a “lord” or a “son.” No one has ever addressed an attribute of Allah with the plea, “O Lord, have mercy on me,” nor has anyone turned to His knowledge, His speech, or His power saying, “O Lord.” Since the prophets did not designate Allah’s attributes as “lord,” even if the Messiah were counted as one of those attributes he still could not be the intended referent of the word “Lord”—how much less could his human nature be intended by that term than his divine nature? It is therefore clear that by this term they meant neither the lāhūt (divine nature) nor the nāsūt (human nature).

Second: The wording is, “The Lord said to my Lord,” which attributes the second “Lord” to the speaker while leaving the first unqualified.
