Section: Refuting Their Appeal to the Passage on Destroying the People of Lot as Proof of the Son’s Lordship
They argue:
“When God overturned Sodom and Gomorrah, He said in the Torah:
‘And the Lord rained from the Lord out of heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah—fire and brimstone.’
By this, they claim, He clarified the lordship of both the Father and the Son.”
Reply:
Their inference from this verse is pure fabrication for several reasons:
First: Calling God’s knowledge or His life “the Son” or “Lord” is an unsound designation. Nowhere in the Torah did Moses refer to any divine attribute by the titles “Son” or “Father.” Hence, anyone who asserts that Moses—peace be upon him—meant by “the Lord” one of God’s attributes, or that God possesses an attribute called His “son,” is uttering falsehood.
Second: Even if, for the sake of argument, one conceded that a divine attribute could bear such a name, it is obvious that the One who sent down the rain is the very One with whom the rain resided. The rain was not with one of them while the other performed the act of raining—just as it is impossible to say that one of them was created from something with the other, or that one of them sent down the rain from the cloud of the other.
