Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Ninth Angle:
All of the authentic passages in their possession offer absolutely no explicit proof for their doctrine. At most they claim that the texts merely appear to support it—and even on that point they are contested, to the extent that one may reply: in fact, the apparent sense of the very texts they cite runs contrary to their position.
It is self-evident that the fundamental articles of faith—those on which the community of believers relies and because of which it pronounces anyone who rejects them to be outside the faith—must be known with certainty from the prophets, and certainty cannot be derived from wording that admits multiple possibilities. Hence it becomes clear that they possess no prophetic knowledge at all concerning the disputed matter.

Tenth Angle:
The clearest statement of the Trinity they can produce is the saying,

“Baptize the people in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

On the strength of this single sentence they have erected their trinitarian creed and affirmed for God three hypostases. Yet the term “hypostasis” was never used by any prophet, nor by any of the apostles, according to their own consensus; it is a later innovation. Some say it is a Roman (i.e., Greek) word meaning “origin” or “substance.” As for the “hypostasis of the Son,” they alternate in describing it: at times they say, “It is the knowledge of God,” at other times, “It is the wisdom of God,” still other times, “It is the Word of God,” and yet other times, “It is the speech of God.”
