Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Allah—exalted is He—strengthened His human messengers so that they were able to receive revelation from the angels. The angels would sometimes come to them in a non-human form and at other times in human guise. Accordingly, for divine realities to appear through subtle beings and reach the prophets is more fitting than for them to appear through dense beings. And if it were at all possible for the Lord—glorified be He—to unite with a living creature and indwell in it, His indwelling in and union with an angel would be more appropriate than with any human being.

Eleventh point:
In their view, the Christian nāsūt (human nature) with which the lāhūt (divine nature) united is both body and soul together, for the Messiah possessed a body and a soul just like other human beings, and, according to them, the divine nature united with the two. Thus the name Messiah in their usage refers simultaneously to an Adamic body and soul and to the divine nature. Consequently, in their doctrine the divine nature united with what is subtle—the soul—and with what is dense—the body; it did not manifest in the dense element alone. Were it not for the subtle element accompanying the dense one, namely the soul, the dense element would have enjoyed no merit or distinction.

Twelfth point:
They liken the union of the lāhūt with the nāsūt to the union of the soul with the body, just as they here liken its manifestation in him to the manifestation of the soul in the body. It is, however, common knowledge that whatever pain afflicts the body is felt by the soul, and whatever pains the soul is also felt by the body. It therefore follows that when the nāsūt was crucified and endured intense agony, the lāhūt must likewise have been in pain and anguish.

I raised this argument with certain Christians, and one of them replied, “The soul is simple, meaning that it does not experience pain.”

I said to him, “What, then, do you say about the souls of the unbelievers after death—are they in bliss or in torment?”

He answered, “They are in torment.”

I responded, “Then it is clear that the disembodied soul can enjoy bliss and suffer punishment. If…"
