Section: Clarifying the meaning of His statement, “And Allah spoke to Moses directly”

They argue: He likewise says, “And Allah spoke to Moses directly” ⦗An-Nisaʾ 4:164⦘.

We reply: What evidence for your claim do you find in this verse? It is, in fact, evidence against you. It is already confirmed that Allah did speak to Moses, and the speech Moses heard from Him is certainly not the Messiah. Hence it is clear that the Messiah is not the speech of Allah, while according to you he is the Word of Allah, the knowledge of Allah, indeed Allah Himself.

Moreover, everyone knows that Allah’s speech is extensive: the Torah, the Gospel, the Qur’an, and other revelations besides. The Messiah is none of these. According to your creed the Messiah is a creator, but were he identical with Allah’s speech he would be neither a creator nor an object of worship. Allah’s speech did not create the heavens and the earth, nor is His speech the deity to be worshipped; it is simply one of His attributes, like His life and His power.

No one says, “O knowledge of Allah, forgive me,” or “O speech of Allah, forgive me.” Rather, the One worshipped and invoked is the God described by knowledge, power, and the very speech with which He spoke to Moses directly.
