Section: Refuting Their Attempt to Use the Quran as Proof for the Hypostases
Next, they began to allege that among the verses revealed to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—there is evidence for the hypostases they have claimed, even though it was they who first invented belief in hypostases and in the Trinity long before Muhammad was ever sent.
This is something they themselves acknowledge, for ever since they fabricated the creed they hold—drawn up by three hundred and eighteen of them in the presence of Emperor Constantine—the matter has been common knowledge among them. If, before Muhammad’s mission, they possessed neither a rational foundation nor any transmitted proof from the earlier prophets, how could they now claim support in the message brought by Muhammad after they had already authored that creed?
This becomes even more untenable in light of the clear, widely transmitted fact that Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—declared them disbelievers in the Book revealed to him, branded their doctrine as misguidance, fought them personally, and commanded that they be fought, as in the Almighty’s words:
“Indeed, they have disbelieved who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary.’” (Quran, Al-Maʾidah 5:17)
and His words:
“The Christians say, ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah.’ That is merely a statement from their mouths; they mimic the utterance of those who disbelieved before them. May Allah destroy them—how are they deluded!” (Quran, At-Tawbah 9:30)
