Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Likewise, the Prophet—may God bless him and grant him peace—said: “Whoever fights so that the word of God may be uppermost is in the path of God.” Thus what is meant is that God established the heavens and the earth by His word, in the manner of His command, “Be,” and this in no way pertains to the Messiah, peace be upon him.

As for your citation of the phrase, “and by the breath of His mouth all their hosts,” this statement—whether sound or spurious—cannot be used as proof for your position. If by that phrase the life of God is meant, then affirming God’s life is indeed true; yet he did not designate God’s life as “the Holy Spirit,” as you have claimed. If, on the other hand, something other than the life of God was intended, the passage does not serve your purpose, for you have alleged that the life of God is the Holy Spirit. You went so far as to say that, in the Gospel command, “Baptize the people in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” the Holy Spirit refers to the life of God, and you asserted that the prophets used this designation. However, you have produced no report from the prophets indicating that they called His life “the Holy Spirit.” Instead, what you have transmitted from them agrees with the Qur’an, namely that “the Holy Spirit” is not intended to mean the life of God.

Even were it granted that the expression had occasionally been used with both senses, it would still not follow that the Messiah, in saying “the Holy Spirit,” meant the life of God—let alone when the prophets, may God’s blessings and peace be upon them all, never once used it in that sense.
