Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Third: The awareness that every originated entity must have an originator is innate and self-evident. For this reason Allah, exalted is He, says in the Qur’an:

“Were they created out of nothing, or are they their own creators?” ⦗52:35⦘

Jubayr ibn Mut‘im said, “When I heard the Prophet ﷺ recite this verse in the Maghrib prayer, I sensed that my heart was about to burst.”

The Exalted One is asking: Were they brought into existence without a Creator who made them, or did they create themselves? It is known by the very fitrah with which Allah has fashioned His servants—and by plain reason—that nothing contingent comes to be except through an agent who brings it into existence.
