Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Had the matter really been as they describe, they would have had no need for that particular wording, nor for making the hypostases three. For it is already common knowledge among them and among the adherents of every religion that Allah exists and is living, all-knowing, all-powerful, and speaking; His attributes are not limited to three, and no three of them should be expressed by a phrase that fails to convey those very attributes—namely the expression “the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” These words, in none of the tongues of any nation, signify what they have claimed for them, nor do the prophets ever employ them for the meanings the Christians attach to them. In fact, affirming the triad they allege and couching it in these terms is an innovation of their own invention, supported by neither revealed law nor sound reason.

They maintain that belief in the Trinity, indwelling, and union rests solely on scripture—the explicit statements of the prophets and the revealed books—and not on rational demonstration. They insist that the divine books have articulated it, and then, assuming that this is what the scripture requires, they labored to devise a rational explanation that they imagined reason would tolerate. Thus, whenever Christians argue for the Trinity or the union, they fall back exclusively on scripture and the sacred texts, while their own minds and hearts recoil from the ideas of Trinity, union, and indwelling. For the innate disposition with which Allah has created humanity, together with the intellectual awareness He has planted in their hearts—what they sometimes call the natural rational law—repels, rejects, and alienates them from such notions. Yet they claim that the divine scriptures taught it, that it surpasses the reach of reason, and that these doctrines belong to a realm that lies beyond the capacity of the intellect.
