“…and that this is My straight ṣirāṭ, so follow it and do not follow the byways, lest they separate you from His way.”
[Al-Anʿām: 153]
In the Sunan collections it is related from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd that he said:
“The Messenger of Allah — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — drew a line for us, then he drew several lines to its right and left. He said, ‘This is Allah’s path, and these are other paths. On every one of those paths sits a devil inviting people to it; whoever answers him, he hurls into the Fire.’ He then recited:
‘…and that this is My straight ṣirāṭ, so follow it and do not follow the byways, lest they separate you from His way.’
[Al-Anʿām: 153]”
Thus the Almighty called His own way a ṣirāṭ and named the others “byways”; He never granted them the title ṣirāṭ, though He does term His path a sabīl just as He calls it a ṣirāṭ.
And the Exalted said, regarding Moses and Aaron:
