Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

slandered the Qur’an, declaring, “Sorcery, poetry, soothsaying,” and the like. The Exalted One says:

“I swear by all that you see and all that you do not see: surely this is the word of a noble messenger. It is not the word of a poet—how little you believe—nor the word of a soothsayer—how little you take heed. It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. Had he concocted any sayings and attributed them to Us, We would have seized him by the right hand, then severed his very artery, and none of you could have protected him. Truly, it is a reminder for the God-fearing. We know well that some of you will deny it, and it will be a cause of anguish for the disbelievers. Yet it is the absolute truth of certainty, so glorify the name of your tremendous Lord.” (al-Ḥāqqah 38–52)

He also says:

“So remind! By the grace of your Lord you are neither a soothsayer nor one possessed. Or do they say, ‘A poet—we will wait and see what fate brings him’? Say, ‘Wait then; I too am waiting with you.’ Do their minds prompt them to say this, or are they a defiant people? Or do they say, ‘He has fabricated it’? Rather, they do not believe. Let them bring speech like it, if they are truthful.” (al-Ṭūr 29–34)

And the Exalted One says:

“Indeed, it is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds; the Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down upon your heart so that you may be one of the warners, in a clear Arabic tongue. It is surely found in the scriptures of the former peoples. Is it not a sufficient sign for them that the scholars of the Children of Israel know it? Yet if We had sent it down upon someone non-Arab and he had recited it to them, they still would not have believed. Thus We have caused it to lodge in the hearts of the guilty—they will not believe in it until they behold the painful punishment, which will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware. Then they will say, ‘Shall we be granted respite?’ Are they asking to hasten Our punishment? Consider: if We let them enjoy life for many years and then what they were promised comes upon them, their past enjoyment will be of no benefit to them. We never destroyed a town without first sending warners to admonish; We were never unjust.” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 192–209)

عَضَّهُوهُ، فَقَالُوا سِحْرٌ، وَشِعْرٌ وَكِهَانَةٌ، وَنَحْوُ ذَلِكَ، كَمَا قَالَ تَعَالَى: {فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ - وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ - إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ - وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تُؤْمِنُونَ - وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ - تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ - وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ - لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ - ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ - فَمَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَاجِزِينَ - وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ - وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنْكُمْ مُكَذِّبِينَ - وَإِنَّهُ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ - وَإِنَّهُ لَحَقُّ الْيَقِينِ - فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ} [الحاقة: ٣٨ - ٥٢] . وَقَالَ: {فَذَكِّرْ فَمَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ - أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ - قُلْ تَرَبَّصُوا فَإِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ - أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُمْ بِهَذَا أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ - أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ بَلْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ - فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِثْلِهِ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ} [الطور: ٢٩ - ٣٤] . وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنْزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ - نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ - عَلَى قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنْذِرِينَ - بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُبِينٍ - وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ - أَوَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُمْ آيَةً أَنْ يَعْلَمَهُ عُلَمَاءُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ - وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَاهُ عَلَى بَعْضِ الْأَعْجَمِينَ - فَقَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ - كَذَلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ - لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ حَتَّى يَرَوْا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ - فَيَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ - فَيَقُولُوا هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنْظَرُونَ - أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ - أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ مَتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ - ثُمَّ جَاءَهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ - مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يُمَتَّعُونَ - وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنْذِرُونَ - ذِكْرَى وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ} [الشعراء: ١٩٢ - ٢٠٩] .
