with them, and I realised that he had only summoned me that day to show me to them. He said, “What do you say about Allah’s words: ‘When the help of Allah comes and the conquest’?” Some of them answered, “We are commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when He grants us victory and opens (lands) for us,” while others remained silent and said nothing. He then said to me, “Is that also what you say, Ibn ʿAbbās?” I replied, “No.” He asked, “Then what do you say?” I said, “It is the time-limit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Allah made known to him. He said: ‘When the help of Allah comes and the conquest,’ and that is the sign of your appointed term: ‘so glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; surely He is ever accepting of repentance.’” ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I know nothing about it except what you have just said.” Recorded by al-Bukhārī.

116 – The third: ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: After the revelation of ‘When the help of Allah comes and the conquest’, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never performed a single prayer without saying in it, “Glory be to You, our Lord, and with Your praise; O Allah, forgive me.” Agreed upon.

In another report in the two Ṣaḥīḥs she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ often said in his bowing and prostration, “Subḥānaka ʾllāhumma rabbana wa bi-ḥamdik, ʾllāhumma’ghfir lī (Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise; O Allah, forgive me),” interpreting the Qur’an—that is, acting on the Qur’anic command, “So glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness.”

In a narration from Muslim: Shortly before he died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ frequently said, “Subḥānaka ʾllāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk (Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You).” ʿĀʾishah said, “Messenger of Allah, what are these new words I hear you repeating?” He replied, “My Lord has set a sign for me in my community; when I see it I must say them: ‘When the help of Allah comes and the conquest …’ to the end of the surah.”

In another narration from Muslim: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ often said, “Subḥānallāhi wa bi-ḥamdih, astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh (Glory be to Allah and with His praise; I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him).” She said, “Messenger of Allah, I see you frequently saying, ‘Subḥānallāhi wa bi-ḥamdih, astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh?’” He said, “My Lord informed me that I would see a sign in my community; when I do, I increase in saying, ‘Subḥānallāhi wa bi-ḥamdih, astaghfirullāha …’.”
