this man’s sāʿ!” So the verse was revealed: “Those who find fault (1) with such of the believers as give freely in charity, and with those who have nothing to give but their own effort…” [al-Tawbah 9:79]. Agreed upon.
“Nuḥāmilu” is read with a ḍammah on the nūn and with the un-dotted ḥāʾ; it means that one of us would carry a load on his back for hire and then donate the wage.
113 – The seventeenth: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī, from Abū Dharr Jundub ibn Junādah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, relating from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He, that He said:
“O My servants! I have forbidden injustice for Myself and have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another. O My servants! Every one of you is astray except those I guide; so ask Me for guidance and I shall guide you. O My servants! Every one of you is hungry except those I feed; so ask Me for food and I shall feed you. O My servants! Every one of you is naked except those I clothe; so ask Me for clothing and I shall clothe you. O My servants! You sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants! You will never be able to harm Me so as to harm Me, nor will you ever be able to benefit Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, were as pious as the most pious heart of any single one of you, that would not add anything to My dominion. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, were as wicked as the most wicked heart of any single one of you, that would not diminish My dominion in the least. O My servants! If the first of you and the last of you, the humans of you and the jinn of you, were to stand together on one plain (2) and each were to ask of Me, and I were to give every person what he asked for, that would not reduce what I possess any more than a needle (3) reduces the sea when it is dipped into it. O My servants! It is but your deeds: I record them for you, then I will recompense you in full for them. So whoever finds good (4), let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself.”
Saʿīd added: Whenever Abū Idrīs related this ḥadīth he would fall to his knees. Muslim transmitted it.
