—for the Hour is far more calamitous and far more bitter.” Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: “A good hadith.”
95 – The eighth: Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related that on the day of Khaybar the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I shall certainly give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger; Allah will grant victory at his hands.” ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) remarked, “Never did I long for leadership except on that day; I rose on tiptoe, hoping I would be called for it.” But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him), handed the banner to him and said, “Advance, and do not look back until Allah grants you conquest.” ʿAlī walked a little, then halted without turning and cried out(1), “Messenger of Allah, against what shall I fight the people?” He replied, “Fight them until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. When they do so, their blood and wealth are protected from you except for what is rightfully due, and their reckoning rests with Allah.” Recorded by Muslim.
“fatasāwartu”—spelled with a plain sīn—means: I sprang up eagerly.
