the feet of the idolaters while we were in the cave, and they were standing right above our heads. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, if one of them were to look down at the spot beneath his feet, he would surely see us.” He replied, “Abū Bakr, what do you think of two men when Allah is the third with them?” (1) Agreed upon.
83 – The Ninth: The Mother of the Believers Umm Salamah—Hind bint Abī Umayyah al-Makhzūmiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her)—reported that whenever the Prophet ﷺ left his house he would say, “In the name of Allah; I have placed my trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from straying or being led astray, from slipping or being caused to slip, from wronging or being wronged, and from acting ignorantly or having ignorance shown to me.” An authentic ḥadīth narrated by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī and others with sound chains (3). Al-Tirmidhī said, “A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.” This wording is that of Abū Dāwūd. (2)
84 – The Tenth: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever says—when he leaves his house—‘In the name of Allah; I have placed my trust in Allah; there is no ability and no power except with Allah,’ will be told, ‘You have been guided, protected, and safeguarded,’ and Satan will withdraw from him.” Related by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī and others. Al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan. Abū Dāwūd added: “Satan then says to another devil, ‘How can you deal with a man who has been guided, protected, and safeguarded?’”
85 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) also related: In the Prophet’s time ﷺ there were two brothers; one of them used to attend the Prophet ﷺ, while the other earned a living. The working brother complained about his sibling to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Perhaps you are being provided for because of him.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī with a sound chain meeting Muslim’s criterion.
