harm whatsoever touched them; they sought the good pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the Lord of tremendous bounty.” [Āl ʿImrān 3:173-174]

He also says, “Put your trust in the Ever-Living One who never dies” [al-Furqān 25:58]; and He says, “In Allah let the believers place their trust” [Ibrāhīm 14:11]; and He says, “When you have resolved, then rely upon Allah” [Āl ʿImrān 3:159]. The verses commanding reliance are many and well known.

He further says, “Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him” [al-Ṭalāq 65:3]—meaning that He will be enough for him. And He says, “The true believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned (1); when His verses are recited to them it increases them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely” [al-Anfāl 8:2]. The verses praising reliance are likewise many and well known.

As for the hadiths:

75 – The first: Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The nations were shown to me. I saw a prophet accompanied by a small party, another prophet accompanied by one or two men, and a prophet with no followers at all. Then a massive multitude was raised before me (2) and I supposed they were my community, but I was told, ‘This is Moses and his people. Look, however, to the horizon.’ I looked, and there was another vast multitude. I was told, ‘Look to the other horizon,’ and there too was a vast multitude. It was said to me, ‘This is your community, and with them are seventy thousand who will enter the Garden without reckoning and without punishment.’

“The Prophet then rose and entered his house, and the people began to discuss those who would enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. Some said, ‘Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ’; others said, ‘Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and never associated anything with Allah’—and they mentioned other ideas. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and asked, ‘What are you discussing?’ They informed him, and he said, ‘They are those who do not perform ruqya, nor do they seek it from others (3), and who do not take omens; rather, they rely upon their Lord.’

Then ʿUkkāsha ibn Miḥṣan stood up

(1) That is: she became afraid. (2) That is: numerous people. (3) That is: they do not request ruqya (protective incantations) from others. “Nor do they seek omens” means they avoid considering birds and the like as portents of misfortune.
