Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

and Majestic. He said, “Keep your wealth; you were only put to trial. Allah is pleased with you, but He is displeased with your companion.” Agreed upon.

“Al-nāqatu al-ʿushrāʾ,” with ḍamma on the ʿayn, fatḥa on the shīn, and an extended vowel, means a pregnant she-camel.

His statement “antaǧa”—and in another wording “fa-tanaj”—means that he undertook its delivery; the nātij for a she-camel is like the qābila (midwife) for a woman.

The phrase “walada hādhā,” with a doubled lām, likewise means he supervised its birth; in the case of a she-camel it has the same sense as “antaǧa.” Thus the muwallid, the nātij, and the qābila are synonymous—the first two apply to animals, the last to humans.

His words “inqaṭaʿat biya al-ḥibāl,” spelled with an unpointed ḥāʾ and a single bāʾ, mean: “the means (of support) have been cut off.”

The phrase “lā ajhaduka” means: I will not put you to hardship over anything you take from, or ask of, my property.

In al-Bukhari’s version the wording is “lā aḥmaduka,” with an unpointed ḥāʾ and a mīm, meaning: I will not find fault with you for leaving behind anything you might need—just as they say, “There is no regret over the length of life,” i.e., over its passing.

67 – The seventh: It is narrated from Abū Yaʿlā Shaddād ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The intelligent one (1) is he who brings his soul to account and works for what comes after death, whereas the incapable one is he who follows his desires and merely indulges in wishful thinking about Allah.” Related by al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan.

Al-Tirmidhī and other scholars said: The meaning of “dāna nafsahu” is that he holds it to account.

68 – The eighth: It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Part of a person’s excellence in Islam is that he leaves alone what does not concern him. (2)” A ḥasan ḥadīth related by al-Tirmidhī and others.

69 – The ninth: It is narrated from ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said, “A man is not to be questioned about…"

(1) That is, the intelligent person; the phrase "man dana nafsahu" (one who subjects his soul) means he humbles and enslaves it to God—some say: he calls it to account. The hadith’s chain of transmission is weak because it contains Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam, who became confused after his house was robbed; see Al-Albani, Daif al-Jami al-Saghir, no. 4305. (2) The expression "ma la yaʿnihi" refers to whatever does not concern him in either his worldly life or the Hereafter.
