that if the whole community were to unite in order to benefit you with anything, they could benefit you only with something Allah has already written for you; and if they were to unite in order to harm you with anything, they could harm you only with something Allah has already written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried. (1) Related by al-Tirmidhī, who said: a fair and sound hadith.
In a wording other than al-Tirmidhī’s: “Guard Allah and you will find Him before you. Become acquainted with Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. And know: whatever misses you could never have struck you, and whatever strikes you could never have missed you. And know: victory comes with patience, relief accompanies distress, and with hardship comes ease.” (2)
64 – Fourth: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “You people commit deeds which you consider to be finer than a hair, yet during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to regard them as among the deadly sins.” Related by al-Bukhārī.
He explained that “the deadly sins (al-mubiqāt)” are the ruinous ones.
65 – Fifth: Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah, Exalted is He, possesses protective jealousy, and Allah’s protective jealousy is aroused when a person does what He has forbidden.” Agreed upon.
The term “protective jealousy” (al-ghayrah) is pronounced with an open ghayn; its root sense is dignified self-respect.
66 – Sixth: Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “Three men from the Children of Israel—a leper, a bald man, and a blind man—Allah wished to test them, so He sent an angel to them. He came to the leper and said, ‘What is most beloved to you?’ He replied, ‘A good complexion, fine skin, and that the thing which makes people loathe me be removed.’ So the angel touched him, and his blemish disappeared (3).”
