45 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A son of Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was ill. Abu Talhah went out, and while he was away the child died. When Abu Talhah returned he asked, “How is my son?” Umm Sulaym—the boy’s mother—replied, “He is now calmer than he has ever been.” She then brought him supper and he ate, after which he had marital relations with her. When they had finished, she said, “Bury the child.”

The next morning Abu Talhah went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what had happened. He asked, “Did you spend the night together?” He replied, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “O Allah, bless them both.” She later gave birth to a boy. Abu Talhah told me, “Carry him to the Prophet ﷺ,” and he sent some dates along with him. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “Does he have anything with him?” He answered, “Yes—some dates.” The Prophet ﷺ took the dates, chewed them, then placed the chewed dates in the baby’s mouth, rubbed them over his palate, and named him ʿAbd-Allah. Agreed upon.

In another wording recorded by al-Bukhari, Ibn ʿUyaynah said: A man from the Anṣār remarked, “I later saw nine children, all of whom had memorised the Quran”—meaning the sons of that newborn ʿAbd-Allah.

A version reported by Muslim states: A son of Abu Talhah by Umm Sulaym died, and she said to her family, “Do not tell Abu Talhah about his son until I am the one who informs him.” He came, and she served him supper, so he ate and drank. She then beautified herself for him (2) more than she had ever done before, and he was intimate with her. When she saw that he had eaten his fill and taken his pleasure with her, she said, “Abu Talhah, tell me (3): if some people lent an article to a household and later asked for it back, could the household refuse to return it?” He said, “No.” She said, “Then seek your reward with Allah for your son. (4)” He became angry and said, “You left me until I was intimate with you, and then you told me about my son?!” He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what had happened, whereupon he said—

The expression “waqa‘a biha” means “he had intercourse with her.” (3) That is: “Tell me.” (4) That is: Seek from Allah the reward for the affliction you suffered concerning your son.
