42 – Abū ʿAbd-Allāh Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was lying with his head upon his cloak in the shade of the Kaʿbah. We asked, “Will you not seek victory for us? Will you not supplicate for us?” He replied, “Those who came before you were seized, a pit was dug for a man and he was placed in it, then a saw was brought and set upon his head, splitting him in two. Iron combs were run over his flesh and bone, yet none of that turned him away from his religion. By Allah, Allah will surely bring this matter to completion until a rider can travel from Ṣanʿāʾ to Ḥaḍramawt fearing none but Allah—and the wolf for his sheep. But you are being hasty.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
In another wording: “…while he was lying with his head upon his cloak, and we had suffered greatly at the hands of the idolaters.”
43 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Ḥunayn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed preference to certain people in the distribution. He gave al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis one hundred camels, ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn the same, and he favored a number of the Arab nobles, granting them more that day. A man said, “By Allah, this is a division in which no justice was sought, nor was Allah’s Face intended.” I said, “By Allah, I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” So I went to him and told him what had been said, whereupon his face changed until it was like red ochre. He then said, “Who would act justly if Allah and His Messenger do not act justly?” He continued, “May Allah have mercy on Moses; he was hurt with worse than this, yet he remained patient.” I said, “From now on I will never convey to him anything of this sort.” Agreed upon.
His phrase “like red ochre” (kaṣ-ṣarf) — with a kasrah on the letter ṣād — refers to a red dye.
44 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When Allah intends good for His servant, He hastens his punishment in this world; and when He intends evil for His servant, He withholds (punishment) for his sin until he meets Him with it on the Day of Resurrection.”
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “The greatness of the reward is proportionate to the severity of the trial. Indeed, when Allah loves a people, He tests them; whoever is content will receive contentment, and whoever is displeased will receive displeasure.” Narrated by
