Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

leaning forward on it as though poised to fight them. He then said, “This is when the furnace of battle is at its hottest.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ next picked up some small pebbles and hurled them at the unbelievers’ faces, after which he proclaimed, “They have been routed—by the Lord of Muhammad!” I went to look, and to all outward appearances the fighting was still raging; yet, by Allah, no sooner had he thrown those pebbles than I saw their onslaught grow dull and their ranks turn tail. Reported by Muslim.

“Al-waṭīs” means a tannūr (earthen oven); here it signifies the fierce heat of battle. His phrase “ḥaddahum” (with a ḥāʾ, not a khāʾ) refers to their fighting strength.

1860 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “People! Allah is good and accepts only what is good. Allah has commanded the believers with the same command He gave to the messengers. He, Most High, said: ‘O messengers, eat of the wholesome things and act righteously’ (Qur’an 23:51); and He said: ‘O you who believe, eat of the wholesome things We have provided for you’ (Qur’an 2:172).”

He then described a man on a long journey, disheveled (1) and dust-covered, who raises his hands toward the sky, crying, “My Lord, my Lord!”—while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and he has been nourished on what is unlawful. “So how,” the Prophet asked, “can such a man’s supplication be answered?” (2) Reported by Muslim.

1861 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Three people Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, nor even look at them, and they will suffer a painful punishment: an elderly adulterer, a lying ruler, and a proud pauper.” Reported by Muslim.

“Al-ʿāʾil” means a poor man.

1862 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) further reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Sayhān, Jayhān, the Euphrates, and the Nile are all rivers of Paradise.” Reported by Muslim.

(1) That is, his hair is unkempt; *aghbar* means his face is covered with dust. (2) That is, how could that man’s supplication be answered?
