Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

from Isfahan—seventy thousand of them—each draped in a cloak.” Narrated by Muslim.

1822 – Umm Sharik—may Allah be pleased with her—reported that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “People will surely flee from the Antichrist into the mountains.” Narrated by Muslim.

1823 – ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn—may Allah be pleased with them both—said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare: “From the creation of Adam until the establishment of the Hour, no affair is more momentous than the Antichrist.” (1) Narrated by Muslim.

1824 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—may Allah be pleased with him—narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The Antichrist will emerge, and a man from among the believers will set out toward him (2). He will be met by the outposts—the Antichrist’s guards—who will ask, ‘Where are you heading? (3)’ He will answer, ‘I am going to the one who has appeared.’ They will say, ‘Do you not believe in our lord?’ He will reply, ‘Nothing about our Lord is hidden!’ They will then say, ‘Kill him.’ But some will say to the others, ‘Did not your lord forbid you to kill anyone without his leave?’ So they will take him to the Antichrist.

When the believer sees him he will proclaim, ‘O people, this is the Antichrist whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned!’ The Antichrist will order that he be stretched out (4) and will say, ‘Seize him and strike him.’ They will beat his back and belly severely, then he will ask, ‘Do you not believe in me?’ The man will reply, ‘You are the False Messiah!’ He will then be ordered to be sawn with a saw from the crown of his head (5) down to between his legs. The Antichrist will walk between the two halves and then say, ‘Stand up,’ and he will stand erect. Again he will ask, ‘Do you now believe in me?’ The man will answer, ‘I have only become surer about you.’ He will then say, ‘O people, after me he will not treat anyone in this way.’ The Antichrist will seize him to slaughter him, but Allah will place between his neck and his collar-bone (6) a plate of copper, so he will be unable to get at him.

(1) Al-Nawawi explains that what is intended is the gravest trial and the most formidable power.
