it would reach him there and take his soul. Only the vilest of humankind will remain—light-footed like birds and with the minds of wild beasts (1). They will recognize no virtue and denounce no vice. Satan will then appear to them and say, “Will you not obey me?” They will reply, “What do you command us to do?” He will order them to worship idols. While they pursue that, their sustenance will flow and their living will seem pleasant.

Then the Trumpet will be blown. Everyone who hears it will tilt one side of his neck and raise the other, and the first to hear it will be a man plastering the trough of his camels (2). He will fall senseless, and so will all people. Allah will then send— or, he said, Allah will cause to descend— a rain like cooling shade; from it the bodies of mankind will sprout. Thereafter it will be blown a second time, and suddenly they will be standing, looking on. It will be proclaimed, “O people, come to your Lord; hold them fast, for they shall be questioned.” Then it will be said, “Bring forth the cohort for the Fire!” Someone will ask, “From how many?” and the answer will come, “From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.” That is the Day that will turn young children grey, the Day when the Shin will be laid bare (3). Narrated by Muslim.

“Layt” is the side of the neck; that is, a person inclines one side of his neck and raises the other.

Every mountain pass leading into them will have angels standing in rows to guard them. He will camp on the barren ground outside Medina, and the city will quake three times, driving out every disbeliever and hypocrite.” Narrated by Muslim.

1821 – And from him—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Antichrist will be followed by of the Jews…"

(1) That is: in their speed toward evil, the pursuit of desire, and corruption, they will be like birds in flight; and in chasing one another they will display the savage traits of predatory beasts. (2) That is: he will plaster it with clay and restore it. (3) That is: the one who has been sent there. (4) That is: the shin of the Lord—magnified and exalted—as indicated by several sound hadiths, some of which state this explicitly; see al-Ahadith al-Sahihah, nos. 583–584. Remember the divine statement, “laysa kamithlihi shayʾ” (“There is nothing like unto Him”), so do not engage in anthropomorphism or denial of His attributes. (5) naq (with a fathah on the nun and a sukun on the qaf) refers to a pass between two mountains; sabkha (with fathah on the sin, ba, and kha) is a sandy, saline ground that grows no vegetation.
