the Mount. Allah will then release Gog and Magog, and they will swarm down from every hillside (1). The first of them will pass by Lake Tiberias (2) and drink it dry; when the last of them goes by he will say, “There used to be water here once.” The Prophet of Allah, Jesus—peace be upon him—will be besieged along with his companions until the head of a bull will be dearer to one of them than a hundred dinars are to any of you today. Jesus—peace be upon him—and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, will implore Allah, and He will send against them the naghaf (a kind of worm) that strikes their necks; by morning they will all be lifeless, dead as though in a single breath (3).

Then the Prophet of Allah, Jesus—peace be upon him—and his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, will come down to the earth, but they will find no span of ground without being filled with their corpses and stench. They will again beseech Allah, so He will send birds with necks like those of Bactrian camels, which will carry them away and cast them wherever Allah wills.

After that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will send a rain that no house of brick (4) nor of hair can keep out; it will wash the earth until it is left like a polished surface. Then it will be said to the earth, “Bring forth your fruits and restore your blessing.” On that day a whole group will eat from a single pomegranate and take shade beneath its rind. Milk will be blessed until a milking camel suffices a large company of people, a milking cow suffices a tribe, and a milking sheep suffices a clan.

While they are in that state, Allah will send a pleasant breeze that will take them from under their armpits and seize the soul of every believer and every Muslim. The worst of people will remain, copulating in public like donkeys (5); upon them the Hour will come.”

(1) The term hadab—pronounced with a short a on the ha, dal, and ba—occurs in the phrase yansilun (“they rush”). Ibn al-Athir explains that it describes people emerging from rugged, elevated ground; the plural is hidab. (2) Buhayra, pronounced with a damma on the ba, a fatha on the ha, and a silent ya, is the diminutive of bahra (“sea,” i.e., “lake”). Tabariyya (Tiberias), with a fatha on both the ta and ba, is a small town overlooking this lake, located on the side of a mountain and formerly part of the Jordan district. It is now under Jewish control—may God purify the land of them, their supporters, and their ilk. (3) I.e., they will die all at once. (4) madar—pronounced with a short a on the mim and dal—means compact clay; wabar, with a short a on the wa and ba, refers to a hair-cloth tent. (5) The word humur—pronounced with a damma on both the ha and mim—indicates that men will copulate with women openly, in full view of others, just as donkeys do, without any sense of shame.
