Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

He said, “Like a raincloud driven by the wind. He will come upon a people, call them, and they will believe in him and follow him (1). Then he will command the sky and it will rain, and the earth and it will sprout forth. Their livestock will return to them at evening with their humps higher than ever, their udders fuller (2), (3), and their flanks heavy with fat. Next he will go to another people and invite them, but they will reject his call; so he will turn away from them, and they will awake the next morning in utter want (4), with nothing at all left of their wealth.

He will pass by a wasteland (5) and say, “Bring out your treasures,” and its treasures will follow him like swarms of bees. Then he will summon a young man in the full bloom of youth (6), strike him with a sword, and cut him in two pieces as far apart as an arrow-shot. He will then call him, and the young man will come forward alive, his face radiant and laughing.

While he is in that state, Allah will send the Messiah, son of Mary—peace be upon him. He will descend by the white minaret, east of Damascus, wearing two lightly dyed garments, his palms resting on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head, beads of moisture will fall (7); when he raises it, drops like glistening pearls will cascade. No disbeliever who smells the sweetness of his breath will remain alive, and his breath will reach as far as his gaze. He will pursue the Dajjal until he overtakes him at the gate of Ludd (8) and kills him.

Jesus, peace be upon him, will then go to a people whom Allah has sheltered from the Dajjal. He will wipe their faces and tell them of their ranks in Paradise. As he is thus engaged, Allah the Exalted will reveal to Jesus—peace be upon him—saying: “I have brought forth servants of Mine against whom no one will have the power to fight. Lead My servants to…"

(1) i.e., they answer him. (2) i.e., it returns upon them. The term sarahatuhum refers to their free-grazing livestock. (3) i.e., it is the tallest because of the abundance of milk, and “the broadest in the flanks” because its sides are swollen from fullness. (4) i.e., they become mamhalin—with an unpointed h—meaning that the rain ceases, the ground dries up, and the pasture withers. (5) Pronounced with a short “a” on the kha, a short “i” on the ra, and ending with a ba; it denotes a ruined place. (6) i.e., in the prime of his youth. (7) i.e., water issues from it. The word al-juman, with a damma on the jim and a light mim, refers to large pearl-shaped beads of silver; the image is that the water cascades from it like great pearls. (8) A town in the part of Palestine occupied in 1948, near al-Ramla west of Jerusalem, where a well-known international airport stands. Built by the British in 1917, it was enlarged by the Jews after 1948 and renamed “Ben-Gurion Airport.”
