In another narration the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O Bashir, do you have any children besides this one?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “Have you given each of them a gift like this?” He answered, “No.” He said, “Then do not make me a witness, for I do not bear witness to injustice.” (1)
In yet another wording: “Do not make me a witness to injustice.”
And in another narration: “Have someone other than me witness this!” Then he added, “Would you be pleased if they were all equally dutiful to you?” He said, “Yes.” He replied, “Then do not do it.” Agreed upon.
354 – Chapter: The prohibition of a woman observing mourning over a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband, for whom the period is four months and ten days
1783 – Zaynab bint Abī Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I entered upon Umm Ḥabībah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, when her father Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away. She called for a perfume that contained a trace of yellow khalūq (2) or something similar, applied some of it to a young girl, and then touched it to her own cheeks. She then said, “By Allah, I have no need for perfume, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from the pulpit: ‘It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn over a deceased person for more than three nights, except for her husband: four months and ten days.’ ”
Zaynab added: I later entered upon Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (may Allah be pleased with her) when her brother had died. She, too, asked for perfume, applied some, and said, “By Allah, I have no need for perfume, but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from the pulpit: ‘It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn over a deceased person for more than three days, except for her husband: four months and ten days.’ ” Agreed upon.
