341 – Chapter: The dislike of turning one’s head during the prayer without necessity

1764 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about turning the head during the prayer, and he replied, “It is a snatching (1) that Satan steals from a servant’s prayer.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.

1765 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Beware of turning in the prayer, for turning in the prayer is ruin. If you must do so, then only in a voluntary prayer, not in an obligatory one.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: This ḥadīth is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (2).

342 – Chapter: The prohibition of praying toward graves

1766 – Abū Marthad Kannāz ibn al-Ḥuṣayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Do not pray facing graves, and do not sit upon them.” Reported by Muslim.

343 – Chapter: The prohibition of passing in front of someone who is praying

1767 – Abū al-Juhaym ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn al-Ṣumma al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If the person who walks in front of a worshiper knew what liability would be upon him, it would be better for him to stand for forty than to pass in front of him.” The narrator added, “I do not know whether he said forty days, forty months, or forty years.” Agreed upon.

(1) Ikhtilas denotes snatching something swiftly while people are unaware. (2) I note: this is how the principal manuscript reads—perhaps copied from a version of Sunan al-Tirmidhi. The Bulaq edition (1/116), however, states “hadith hasan” (a sound report), and its margin adds: “in another copy: hasan gharib” (sound yet solitary). In reality, the correct ruling is that the report is daif (weak), which better reflects its isnad, for the chain is both weak and broken. A full discussion may be found in my notes on Mishkat (pp. 172, 465, 997) and on Targhib (1/191). —N—

(١) الاختلاس : الأخذ بسرعة على غفلة .
