Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

the posture of al-jabwah (1) on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon. Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who both judged it to be a ḥasan (sound) hadith.

313 – Chapter: The prohibition for anyone who has entered the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah and intends to offer a sacrifice from taking anything of his hair or nails until the sacrifice has been made

1715 – Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Whoever owns an animal for slaughter, then once the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah is sighted, let him not remove anything from his hair or his nails until he has offered the sacrifice.” Narrated by Muslim.

314 – Chapter: The prohibition of swearing an oath by any created being—such as the Prophet, the Kaʿbah, the angels, the sky, one’s forefathers, life, the soul, one’s head, the blessing of the ruler, the soil of so-and-so, or by al-Amānah, which is among the most emphatically forbidden forms

1716 – Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, related that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah the Exalted forbids you to swear by your forefathers. Whoever must take an oath should swear by Allah, or remain silent (3).” Agreed upon. Another wording in the Ṣaḥīḥ reads: “Whoever must take an oath should swear by none but Allah, or keep quiet.”

1717 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not swear by the ṭāghūt, nor by your forefathers.” Narrated by Muslim.

(1) Al-jabwah: a form of iḥtibāʾ—sitting with one’s knees drawn up and clasped by the arms or by one’s garment.
(2) I.e., an animal designated for sacrifice.
(3) Or: “keep silent.”

(1) It refers to sitting with one’s legs pulled up against the abdomen, wrapped together with the back in a garment that is then fastened around the body. (2) It denotes whatever is slaughtered—whether a sacrificial offering or any other animal. (3) That is, he deliberately refrains from swearing an oath by anything other than Allah.
