Chapter 308 – Disapproval of riding a jallālah animal
A jallālah is a camel, male or female, that feeds on excrement. If it is subsequently given wholesome fodder so that its flesh becomes clean, the disapproval no longer applies.

1701 – Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade riding a jallālah among camels. Narrated by Abū Dāwūd with an authentic chain.

Chapter 309 – Prohibition of spitting in the mosque, the duty to remove it if found, and the command to keep the mosque free of impurities

1702 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Spitting in the mosque is a sin, and its expiation is to bury it.” Agreed upon.

“Burying” applies when the mosque floor is of earth, sand, and the like, so one covers the sputum beneath the soil. Abū al-Maḥāsin al-Ruyānī stated in his book al-Baḥr: Some have understood “burying” to mean removing the sputum from the mosque altogether. As for a mosque that is paved or plastered, rubbing it into the floor with one’s shoe or something else—as many ignorant people do—is not burying; rather, it enlarges the sin and spreads more impurity in the mosque. Whoever commits such an act must then wipe it away with his garment, his hand, or something else, or wash it.

1703 – ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw on the qiblah wall some mucus, or spittle, or phlegm, so he scraped it off. Agreed upon.

1704 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “These mosques are not fit for any sort of urine or filth; they exist only for the remembrance of Allah the Exalted and the recitation of the Quran,” or as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. Narrated by Muslim.
