1665 – Masrūq reported: We entered upon ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) and he said, “People, whoever knows something should speak according to his knowledge, and whoever does not know should say: ‘Allah knows best.’ Saying ‘Allah knows best’ about what one does not know is itself part of knowledge. Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet ﷺ: ‘Say, “I ask you for no reward for this, nor am I one of those who feign.”’ ” [Bukhārī]
302 – Chapter: The prohibition of wailing over the deceased, striking the cheeks, tearing the garment, plucking or shaving the hair, and invoking ruin and destruction.
1666 – ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ declared, “The deceased is tormented in his grave on account of the wailing that is performed over him.” In another wording: “because of the wailing over him.” Agreed upon.
1667 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever strikes the cheeks, rends the front of the garment, or cries with the cry of the Age of Ignorance is not one of us.” Agreed upon.
1668 – Abū Burdah said: Abū Mūsā became ill and fell unconscious while his head was in the lap of a woman from his family. She began to scream with a prolonged, piercing cry(1), and he was unable to stop her. When he regained consciousness he said, “I repudiate what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repudiated, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is free of the sāliqah, the ḥāliqah, and the shāqqah!” Agreed upon.
“The sāliqah” is the woman who raises her voice in wailing and lamentation; “the ḥāliqah” is the woman who shaves her head at a calamity; “the shāqqah” is the woman who tears her garment.
1669 – al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Whoever is wailed over will be punished for that wailing on the Day of Resurrection.” Agreed upon.
(1) A shrill, continuous wail.
