300 – Chapter: The prohibition of leaving a fire burning in the house at bedtime, whether the flame is in a lamp or anything else.
1661 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not leave a fire burning in your houses when you go to sleep.” Agreed upon.
1662 – Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A house in Madinah caught fire over its occupants during the night. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of the incident, he said, “This fire is an enemy to you, so when you go to sleep, extinguish it.” Agreed upon.
1663 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Cover the vessels, fasten(1) the water-skins, close the doors, and put out the lamp, for Satan neither unties a water-skin, nor opens a door, nor uncovers a vessel. If one of you finds nothing with which to cover his vessel except placing a stick across it while mentioning the name of Allah, then let him do so, for the little vermin (al-fuwaysiqah) sets the people of a house on fire.” Narrated by Muslim.
(1) Secure the mouth of the water-skin by tying or fastening it.
“Al-fuwaysiqah” refers to the mouse, and “tudrim” means “sets fire.”
301 – Chapter: The prohibition of pretentious affectation – that is, doing or saying what brings no benefit yet entails hardship.
Allah the Exalted said: “Say, ‘I ask you for no reward for it, nor am I of those who pretend.’” (Surah Ṣād 38:86)
1664 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, “We were forbidden to affect pretension.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
