Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

1641 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Two categories of the people of Hell I have not yet encountered: a people who will have whips like the tails of cattle with which they beat others; and women who are clothed yet naked, swaying and causing others to sway, whose heads are like the inclined humps of Bactrian camels. They will neither enter Paradise nor even smell its fragrance, though its fragrance can be perceived from such-and-such a distance.” Narrated by Muslim.

The term “clothed” means they enjoy Allah’s favor, while “naked” means they show no gratitude for it. It is also said that it refers to a woman who covers part of her body and exposes another part to display her beauty, or that she wears a thin garment that reveals the color of her skin.

“Māʾilāt” (inclined) has been explained as inclining away from obedience to Allah and from what they are obligated to preserve, while “mumīlāt” (inclining others) means they teach others their blameworthy conduct. Another interpretation is that they walk with an affected strut, tilting their shoulders, and that they arrange other women’s hair in that same style.

“Their heads are like the humps of Bactrian camels” means they enlarge and heighten them by wrapping a turban, a band, or something similar around them (1).

293 – Chapter: The prohibition of imitating Satan and the unbelievers

1642 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not eat with the left hand, for Satan eats with the left hand.” Narrated by Muslim.

1643 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “None of you must ever eat with his left hand or drink with it, for Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with it.” Narrated by Muslim.

1644 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Jews and the Christians do not dye [their hair], so differ from them.” Agreed upon.

What is intended is dyeing the white hair of the beard and head with yellow or red; as for black, that is prohibited, as will be mentioned in the following chapter, if Allah wills.

(1) I note that the hadith has already been fulfilled in our own time, so no allegorical interpretation is needed.
