so turn away from them; they are filth (1), and their abode is Hell—a recompense for what they used to earn. They will swear to you so that you may be pleased with them; but even if you are pleased with them, Allah is never pleased with a defiantly disobedient people.” (al-Tawbah 95–96)
Kaʿb went on: We three were set apart from the case of those whose excuses the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted when they swore to him; he took their pledge and sought forgiveness for them, whereas the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deferred our matter until Allah, Exalted is He, decreed concerning it. Allah the Exalted said, “And (He also turned in mercy) to the three who were left behind.” What He mentioned about our being “left behind” does not mean that we stayed back from the campaign itself; rather, it refers to his keeping us apart and postponing judgment on us, unlike those who swore to him, offered excuses, and were pardoned. Agreed upon (2).
In one narration: The Prophet ﷺ set out for the Tabuk expedition on a Thursday, and he preferred to depart on Thursdays.
In another narration: He never arrived from a journey except in the forenoon; when he came, he would begin with the mosque, pray two rakʿahs there, and then sit down.
- Abū Najīd—pronounced with a ḍammah on the nūn and a fatḥah on the jīm—ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn al-Khuzāʿī, may Allah be pleased with both of them, reported that a woman of Juhaynah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while she was pregnant from adultery and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have incurred a prescribed penalty; carry it out on me.” The Prophet of Allah ﷺ summoned her guardian and said, “Treat her kindly, and when she gives birth, bring her to me.” He did so. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ then ordered that her clothes be secured tightly around her (3), after which she was stoned. He then performed the funeral prayer over her. ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, you pray over her even though she committed adultery?” He replied, “She has repented with a repentance that, if distributed among seventy people of Madinah, would suffice them all. Have you found any act better than her sacrificing her very life for Allah, Mighty and Majestic?!”
