and he then ordered that his own donkey be branded on its two buttocks, becoming the first person to mark an animal in that spot. ⦗Muslim⦘

The expression al-jāʿiratān denotes the region of the hips surrounding the anus.

1615 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once passed by a donkey that had been branded on the face and said, “May Allah curse the one who branded it.” ⦗Muslim⦘

Muslim likewise narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade striking the face and branding the face.

283 – Chapter: The prohibition of tormenting with fire
This applies to every creature, even an ant and the like.

1616 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a military detachment and instructed, “If you encounter so-and-so and so-and-so”—two Qurayshite men whom he named—“burn them with fire.” When we were about to depart, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I had ordered you to burn so-and-so and so-and-so, but fire is used for punishment only by Allah. If you find them, kill them instead.” ⦗al-Bukhārī⦘

1617 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were travelling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). While he stepped aside to relieve himself, we saw a red-breasted bird with two chicks; we took the chicks, and the mother began fluttering anxiously. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and asked, “Who has distressed this bird by taking its young? Return its young to it.” He also noticed an anthill that we had burned and asked, “Who set this on fire?” We replied, “We did.” He said, “It is not fitting for anyone to punish with fire except the Lord of the Fire.” ⦗Abū Dāwūd⦘ with a sound chain.

(1) The original reading is min at-ta‘rish (to hover above), i.e., the bird rises and shades those beneath it with its wings, as Ibn al-Athir notes in al-Nihaya. Sunan Abi Dawud records the verb as tafrush (to spread out), which carries virtually the same sense, while al-Adab al-Mufrad has tarif. The expression man fajaʿ (who has distressed) means: who has harmed this bird by taking away its young.
