In another wording: “I was the seventh of my brothers.”
1611 – Abū Masʿūd al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I was striking a slave boy of mine with a whip when I heard a voice behind me saying, ‘Take note, Abū Masʿūd!’ Because I was angry I did not recognize the voice, but when the speaker drew near I discovered that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He was saying, ‘Take note, Abū Masʿūd: Allah has more power over you than you have over this boy.’ So I declared, ‘I shall never again beat a slave.’
In one version: ‘The whip fell from my hand out of awe of him.’
In another version I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I set him free for the sake of Allah.’ He replied, ‘Had you not done so, the Fire would have scorched you—or touched you.’(1) Muslim recorded all of these narrations.
1612 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever beats his slave boy for a ḥadd penalty the latter has not incurred, or slaps him, must set him free as his expiation.” ⦗Muslim⦘

He asked, “What is this?” They answered, “They are being punished for the kharāj.” In another narration: “They have been detained for the jizya.” Hishām said, “I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘Allah punishes those who torture people in this world.’” He then went in to the governor, told him what he had heard, and the governor ordered that the men be released.(2) ⦗Muslim⦘
